The UAE is compact enough to explore several very different landscapes by road. A single trip can take you from Dubai’s urban skyline to Hatta’s mountains, Al Ain’s oasis, Ras Al Khaimah’s high peaks, or the beaches of Fujairah and Khorfakkan. The best destination depends on whether you want mountain scenery, heritage, beaches, desert landscapes, outdoor activities, or a relaxed weekend drive.
Driving gives you more flexibility than following a fixed tour itinerary. You can leave early, stop at viewpoints, combine nearby attractions, and return to your starting city the same day.

The UAE has seven emirates, and official tourism guidance highlights the ease of travelling between them by road. This makes multi-emirate road trips practical when you have enough time.
Hatta is one of the easiest mountain escapes from Dubai. The landscape changes from the city’s developed streets to rocky Hajar Mountain scenery as you approach the town.
Hatta works particularly well for travellers who want outdoor activities without committing to a long-distance road trip. Visit Hatta Dam for mountain views and kayaking, then explore Hatta Wadi Hub for hiking, mountain biking and other activities. Visit Hatta Heritage Village if you want to add some local history to the trip.
The current Dubai tourism map places Hatta around 130 kilometres southeast of central Dubai and identifies attractions including Hatta Dam, Hatta Wadi Hub, Heritage Village, hiking trails and mountain-biking routes.
Good route idea:
Dubai → Hatta Dam → Hatta Wadi Hub → Hatta Heritage Village → Hatta town → Dubai
For this type of trip, a comfortable SUV for a UAE road trip can make sense when you are travelling with several passengers or carrying outdoor equipment. You do not need an off-road vehicle simply because the destination is mountainous; stay on paved public roads unless your vehicle and activity are specifically suitable for off-road conditions.
Al Ain offers a completely different experience from Dubai and Abu Dhabi. The city combines green oases, historic forts, archaeological sites and mountain scenery.
Start at Al Ain Oasis, where traditional falaj irrigation channels support extensive date-palm plantations. The oasis forms part of the UNESCO-listed Cultural Sites of Al Ain.
Continue to Al Jahili Fort or Qasr Al Muwaiji before driving towards Jebel Hafit. The mountain rises dramatically from the surrounding desert and provides panoramic views over the landscape.
Al Ain is particularly suitable for a day trip from Abu Dhabi. Experience Abu Dhabi places the drive from central Abu Dhabi at about 90 minutes.
Suggested itinerary:
Abu Dhabi → Al Ain Oasis → Al Jahili Fort → Jebel Hafit → Green Mubazzarah → Abu Dhabi
Start early if you want to cover several attractions without rushing.
Ras Al Khaimah combines beaches, desert landscapes and the Hajar Mountains, making it one of the most varied road-trip destinations in the country.
The main attraction for drivers is Jebel Jais, the UAE’s highest mountain. The road climbs through rugged mountain scenery and provides several opportunities to stop for views.
Ras Al Khaimah’s tourism authority describes the emirate as a destination combining beaches, mangroves, desert and mountain landscapes. Its current visitor map also identifies Jebel Jais and routes through the surrounding mountain region.
You can make the trip more than a mountain drive by adding a beach or resort stay around Al Hamra or Marjan Island.
Best for: mountain scenery, photography, outdoor activities and weekend escapes.
If you plan to stay overnight, a weekly car rental in the UAE can be practical for a multi-day itinerary that includes several emirates rather than a single destination.
Khorfakkan gives you one of the UAE’s most distinctive driving experiences because the road approaches a coastal town surrounded by rugged mountains.
Visit Khorfakkan Beach, walk along the waterfront and see the Khorfakkan Amphitheater and Waterfall. You can also explore activities such as kayaking, diving and other watersports.
On the way, stop at Al Rafisah Dam. The destination sits among the mountains and offers kayaking, hiking, viewpoints and family facilities. Sharjah’s tourism authority specifically describes it as a road-trip destination on the route to Khorfakkan.
A practical route is:
Sharjah or Dubai → Al Rafisah Dam → Khorfakkan → Khorfakkan Beach → Amphitheater → return
This route works especially well when you want mountains and sea in the same day.
Fujairah sits on the UAE’s eastern coast and offers a different landscape from the Gulf-facing cities.
The Hajar Mountains form a dramatic backdrop, while coastal areas provide opportunities for swimming, diving and relaxation. Fujairah Fort adds a historical element to the trip, while Al Aqah and the waters around Snoopy Island appeal to visitors interested in beaches and marine activities.
Experience Abu Dhabi also highlights Fujairah’s historic forts, beaches and Snoopy Island as attractions worth exploring on a UAE road trip.
A longer itinerary can combine Fujairah with Khorfakkan, Dibba or nearby mountain areas.
Abu Dhabi deserves more than a quick stop because its attractions are spread across different parts of the emirate.
Begin with the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, then continue towards Qasr Al Watan. You can spend another part of the day exploring Yas Island, where attractions include Ferrari World Abu Dhabi, Warner Bros. World Abu Dhabi and Yas Waterworld.
The city’s coastal areas also provide a different side of Abu Dhabi, while Saadiyat Island combines beaches, museums and cultural attractions.
Official Abu Dhabi tourism itineraries combine the city’s major landmarks with Yas Island, beaches and a day trip to Al Ain, showing how easily these experiences can form part of a longer driving itinerary.
Liwa Oasis suits travellers who want to experience the UAE’s desert landscape rather than its cities.
The journey takes you deep into Abu Dhabi’s Al Dhafra region, where the scenery changes from developed urban areas to vast sand dunes and oasis settlements.
Liwa works better as an overnight or weekend trip because the distance makes a same-day return more demanding. Plan fuel stops, accommodation and daylight driving before leaving.
If you intend to explore desert tracks rather than paved roads, use a suitable 4WD and follow local access and safety requirements. Abu Dhabi’s tourism guidance recommends checking the vehicle, tyres, spare equipment, water, navigation and communications before off-road desert driving.
Sharjah works well for a shorter cultural road trip. The emirate has museums, heritage areas, markets and family attractions, while its eastern territory opens the route towards mountains and the Gulf of Oman.
You can extend the journey towards Khorfakkan, Kalba or Wadi Shees instead of returning immediately to Dubai.
Sharjah’s East Coast includes Khorfakkan and Kalba, where visitors can combine beaches, mountains, mangroves and outdoor activities.
This makes Sharjah particularly useful for building a flexible one-day route with several different experiences.
Dubai itself can work as a road-trip destination when you explore areas beyond Downtown.
Start around Burj Khalifa and Downtown Dubai, then continue towards Jumeirah, Dubai Marina or Palm Jumeirah. For a different landscape, drive towards the desert areas around Al Marmoom and Dubai Desert Conservation Reserve, subject to access rules and permitted activities.
Dubai’s official tourism map also identifies destinations including Al Fahidi Historical Neighbourhood, Dubai Creek, Al Qudra Lakes, Love Lake, the Dubai Desert Conservation Reserve and Hatta.
A short-term car rental can therefore work well when your itinerary includes several Dubai neighbourhoods and day trips outside the city.
Choose the destination according to the experience you want rather than simply the distance.
The right vehicle depends on the route, number of passengers and luggage rather than simply the destination.

A standard sedan is enough for most paved UAE highways and tourist destinations. An SUV becomes more useful when you need additional luggage space, passenger capacity or higher ground clearance. A specialist 4WD is necessary only for routes and activities that actually require off-road capability.
For visitors staying several days and planning multiple destinations, comparing daily, weekly and monthly car rental options can also help match the vehicle period to the itinerary instead of arranging separate transport for every trip. Great Dubai’s car-rental listings can be another place to compare vehicle categories and rental arrangements when planning a UAE road trip.
Good preparation makes a road trip easier, especially when you leave the major cities.
Use a reliable navigation app and check the destination’s access roads before leaving. Mountain and desert areas can have different road conditions and fewer services than urban areas.
Early departures help you avoid heavy traffic and give you more daylight for sightseeing. This matters particularly for longer drives towards Al Ain, Ras Al Khaimah and Liwa.
Do not wait until the fuel tank is nearly empty when travelling through remote areas. Carry drinking water, especially during warmer months.
Observe posted speed limits, lane markings, parking restrictions and toll requirements. Do not assume that an empty desert or mountain road permits unrestricted driving.
Heat, fog, rain and occasional storms can affect visibility and road conditions. Mountain roads can also feel very different from urban routes.
A normal highway trip and an off-road desert excursion require different preparation. Use a suitable vehicle, check tyre condition and carry essential recovery and emergency equipment when travelling into remote desert terrain.
If you have several days, you can connect different landscapes rather than spending the entire trip in one city.
Day 1: Dubai city attractions
Day 2: Hatta mountain trip
Day 3: Abu Dhabi landmarks
Day 4: Al Ain and Jebel Hafit
Day 5: Khorfakkan and Al Rafisah Dam
Day 6–7: Fujairah or Ras Al Khaimah
For a longer holiday, replace the shorter excursions with an overnight stay in Ras Al Khaimah or a desert-focused trip to Liwa.
The UAE is particularly well suited to road travel because its landscapes change quickly between cities, mountains, coastline and desert. Hatta provides an accessible mountain escape, Al Ain combines oasis scenery with heritage, Ras Al Khaimah brings mountain and beach experiences together, while Khorfakkan and Fujairah offer eastern-coast scenery.
For a first road trip, build the route around one main destination and a few nearby stops rather than trying to cover the entire country in a single day. That approach gives you enough time to enjoy the drive as well as the destination.
