How Long Does it Take a Tattoo to Fully Heal?

After getting a tattoo it normally takes a few weeks to heal fully. Tattooing involves the use of tiny needles that penetrate your skin to inject ink into deeper layers. As a result, the healing process includes temporary phases of redness, discharge, itching, and flaking.

How Long Does It Take a Tattoo to Fully Heal?

Generally, it takes approximately one month after getting a tattoo on a healthy and young individual. But it may take 3 months to heal fully.

Larger tattoos take longer to recover. Certain factors like picking at the scabs, not moisturizing, not using sunblocks, and using chemical-based lotions can slow down the process.

Tattoo Healing Stages

Tattoo Healing Process Day by Day

The first stage is the most intense. Right after getting a tattoo, it is normal for the skin to be red and swollen. Here’s what to expect in the first days;

  • Day 1-3–Inflammation: The tattooed area will appear red and swollen for the first 48 to 72 hours. This is your body’s natural response to the trauma of the needles. There may also be tenderness, and the area may feel warm to the touch. Keep the tattoo clean and avoid touching it with dirty hands. Prolonged symptoms should be evaluated by the tattoo artist.
  • Day 4-7–Visible Recovery: By this stage, the tattoo will begin forming scabs and peeling as the skin starts to heal. This is a normal part of the healing process, but it can be itchy and uncomfortable. Avoid picking at or scratching the scabs because it can lead to more injury.
