Beyond the Hang Tag: How to Style Unisex Streetwear

How do you style unisex streetwear? Pick your size for the silhouette you want, not the gender on a hang tag. Anchor the outfit with one heavyweight basic, balance a loose top with a cleaner bottom (or flip it), layer by weight, and let a single graphic or detail do the talking.

That’s the whole method. The rest of this guide is how we actually do it.

Every piece we make at JŪN uses unisex sizing. Same pattern, same fabric, cut and sewn in New York. Our DAWN. HOODIE is shot on Andrea at 5’8″ in a 0.0 and on Max at 6’3″ in a 0.3. Two people, one hoodie, two completely different looks.

One vision. Infinite stories. We mean it literally.

What “unisex” actually means in streetwear

Unisex streetwear is clothing cut from one pattern and sized on one scale, meant to be worn by anyone. No separate men’s and women’s versions. You choose the size that gives you the shape you want.

In practice that usually means a straighter body, a dropped shoulder, and more room through the chest and hem than a traditional women’s cut. Women’s patterns tend to nip in at the waist and run shorter in the torso. A unisex pattern doesn’t. That’s why the same tee reads as boxy on one person and relaxed on another.

And the idea isn’t new. Clothing used to be far less gendered than most people assume. The Smithsonian’s history of pink and blue traces how the “pink for girls, blue for boys” rule didn’t really settle until the 1940s, and how a 1918 trade publication actually recommended pink for boys. So when we put our ETCH. HOODIE out in sun-faded pink, we’re not making a statement. We’re just making a good pink hoodie.

How JŪN sizing works

Our sizes run on a numbered scale: 0.0 (XS), 0.1 (S), 0.2 (M), 0.3 (L), and 0.4 (XL) on select styles. Every product page lists the fit (“slightly oversized,” “boxy, oversized,” or “loose, relaxed”) plus the height and size of each model. Use that. It’s the most honest sizing information you’ll find on any page.

How to choose your size in unisex streetwear

Decide on the silhouette first, then pick the size. Want it clean? Size down one from your usual. Want it the way we designed it? Take your normal size. Want real volume? Size up, but only on tees and hoodies. Jackets and pants sized up just look borrowed.

The quickest way to get it right: lay your favorite hoodie or tee flat, measure armpit to armpit and collar to hem, then compare against the size chart on the product page. Numbers beat guesswork.

Here’s how our own models wear current pieces, straight from the product pages:

Piece Designed fit Fabric weight Who wears what
DAWN. HOODIE Boxy, oversized, slightly cropped 524 gsm French terry Andrea, 5’8″: 0.0 · Danelya, 5’9″: 0.1 · Max, 6’3″: 0.3
ETCH. HOODIE Oversized, baggy 400 gsm French terry Ryan, 5’9″: 0.2
INSIGNIA. TEE Slightly boxy, relaxed 240 gsm jersey Naoki, 6’2″: 0.2 · Darius, 6’1″: 0.2
ICHIGO. TEE Slightly oversized 300 gsm jersey Hazel, 5’5″: 0.0 · Ryan, 5’9″: 0.2
DAWN. SWEATS Loose, relaxed, tapered ankle 524 gsm French terry Andrea, 5’8″: 0.0 · Max, 6’3″: 0.2
ONYX. JKT Slightly oversized 270 gsm cotton twill Hazel, 5’5″: 0.0 · Ryan, 5’9″: 0.1

Notice the pattern. On the DAWN. HOODIE, a 5’8″ wearer in 0.0 gets a cropped, boxy shape that hits at the hip. A 6’3″ wearer in 0.3 gets the same proportions scaled up. Same design intent, different body.

One honest warning

We’re a small studio, and we don’t currently accept returns or exchanges. So take the two minutes to measure. If you’re stuck between sizes, message us with your height and the piece you’re looking at. We’d rather help you choose than have you guess.

Build every outfit on a heavyweight base

Heavyweight basics are the reason unisex streetwear looks intentional instead of sloppy. Thick fabric holds its own shape, so an oversized tee drapes in straight lines rather than clinging or collapsing.

The number to check is GSM, grams per square meter. Printful’s t-shirt weight guide puts the typical midweight tee at roughly 150 to 180 gsm. Our tees start at 230 and go up to 300. Our signature hoodies and sweats sit at 524. You feel that the second you pick one up.

Why it matters for styling:

  • Shoulders stay square. A dropped shoulder on thin jersey just sags. On 300 gsm cotton it reads as a deliberate boxy line.
  • Hems hang clean. Heavy French terry doesn’t ride up or bunch, which is what makes a slightly cropped hoodie like the DAWN. work over high-rise pants.
  • Layers don’t fight. A structured tee under a jacket keeps its collar shape instead of crumpling.
  • They last. Thicker knits hold up to years of washing, which matters when a piece won’t be restocked.

The three pieces to own first

If you’re building from zero, start with a plain heavyweight tee, a heavyweight hoodie, and a pair of sweats in the same fabric family. Our JŪN Classics were designed exactly for this: the INSIGNIA. TEE with nothing but a small chest logo, the DAWN. HOODIE, and the DAWN. SWEATS. Wear them together as a set, or break them up. Either way, everything you add later has something solid to sit on.

Keep the base neutral. Black, white, gray, khaki. Let the color come from one piece at a time.

Balance volume: the proportion rules that work on any body

The biggest mistake with oversized clothing is going big everywhere at once. Huge hoodie, huge pants, nothing defined. You disappear. Pick where the volume lives, and keep the other half sharper.

Rule 1: Loose on top, structured below

A boxy hoodie or oversized tee over pants with a clear line. Our RIG. PANTS are a good example: a carpenter cut in 270 gsm cotton twill with adjustable side tabs, so you can cinch the waist and keep the leg clean while the top does its thing.

Rule 2: Fitted on top, volume below

Flip it. A tee in your true size (or one down) with a relaxed cargo like the NODE. PANTS, whose single asymmetrical pocket adds interest without bulk. This one works especially well if you’re shorter, since it keeps your shoulders visible.

Rule 3: Watch where the hem lands

Cropped and boxy pieces, like the DAWN. HOODIE, are cut to hit at the hip on purpose. Pair them with higher-rise pants so you see a line where top meets bottom. Longer tees can do a quick front tuck for the same effect. It takes three seconds and changes the whole outfit.

Rule 4: Finish at the ankle

Tapered or cuffed hems stop wide-leg looks from swallowing your shoes. The DAWN. SWEATS taper at the ankle and add adjustable calf strings for exactly this reason. The ETCH. LOGO SWEATS do it with an elastic cuff.

Browse every cut in our pants collection and our tops side by side. Mixing a relaxed top with a structured bottom is the fastest way to look styled rather than dressed in a hurry.

How to layer unisex streetwear through a New York year

Layer from lightest to heaviest, keep each layer a different length, and make the outer layer the most structured. That’s it. New York just tests the rule harder than most cities.

We design in a city where one October day can open in the 50s and close in the 70s. The National Weather Service’s Central Park normals show average highs sliding from 70°F on October 1 to 59°F by Halloween. In January, the average high is about 40°F and the average low about 28°F. You need clothes that come off easily on the subway and go back on at the platform.

Season Central Park normals (1991–2020) Layering formula Pieces we’d reach for
Fall Highs fall from 70°F to 59°F through October Heavyweight tee + structured jacket, worn open IKE. JACKET over an INSIGNIA. TEE
Winter Highs near 40°F, lows near 28°F in January Tee + 524 gsm hoodie + shell or twill jacket DAWN. HOODIE under the TERRA. JKT
Spring April averages about 62°F high, 46°F low Hoodie or zip-up as the outer layer, swap for a windbreaker on rainy days DAWN. ZIP UP or KAZE. WINDBREAKER
Summer July highs average about 85°F One great tee, no layers. Let the graphic carry it Any tee from our T-shirts collection

Three layering moves we use constantly

Let the hem show. A tee that peeks out an inch below a cropped hoodie adds a second line and makes the outfit look built rather than thrown on.

Open the jacket. A track jacket like the ONYX. JKT worn unzipped creates a vertical frame down the body. It’s slimming on everyone, at any height.

Use a hood as a layer. The TERRA. JKT has a detachable hood with custom snaps. Hood on, it’s outerwear. Hood off, it’s a classic trucker. Same with wearing a hoodie under a jacket and pulling the hood out over the collar.

For the cold months, everything’s in one place in our outerwear collection. Many of our jackets are made in runs of just 12 to 15 pieces by our manufacturer in the Garment District, so if one speaks to you, don’t wait for a restock.

Let one graphic tell the story

Every good streetwear outfit has one focal point. Usually it’s the tee. When you’re wearing a graphic, everything else should step back and support it.

That’s why so many of our graphics live on the back, with only a small mark on the front left chest. From the front, the outfit reads clean. Turn around and the story shows up. The KOI. TEE does exactly this: a quiet chest graphic, then two koi circling in a yin-yang on the back. The ICHIGO. TEE pulls from retro Japanese fruit packaging: a small “I love 苺” on the chest and a big vintage strawberry (苺) across the back. Certified fresh.

How to style a back graphic

  • Wear it as the outer layer in warm months, or leave your jacket fully open.
  • Skip backpacks on the days you want the graphic seen. Go with a tote or a crossbody instead, like the totes in our accessories.
  • Pull one color from the print into another piece. A green detail in the graphic plus green sweats ties the outfit together without trying hard.

Artist collabs: wearable art, not merch

We work with emerging artists from their sketchbooks all the way to our fabric. Our artist collab collection includes pieces with MUSA (who also designed our ETCH. logo), Alex Tsai, Creature Creature, ichiban.luv, and others. Treat these like you’d treat a print on your wall. Neutral base, one artwork, done.

Some graphics carry a specific place and moment. The BORLORBAO. BOXY TEE was made for ComplexCon Hong Kong, held at AsiaWorld-Expo in March 2026. It features a bor lor bao (pineapple bun) and Hong Kong milk tea, plus the venue’s coordinates. A tee like that doesn’t need styling help. It needs plain pants and a little confidence.

Fresh graphics land in New Arrivals first, including the RETRO PLANET. TEE and the pixel-inspired Taste x JŪN collab tees.

Five unisex outfit formulas you can copy today

Copy these as written or treat them as templates. Each one follows the proportion and layering rules above, and each one works across sizes 0.0 to 0.3.

Formula Top Bottom Layer / extra Why it works

Swap colors freely. Swap sizes freely. The formula is the structure, not the specific pieces. For more styling ideas, browse our gallery.

Keep the fit you paid for: care basics

Wash cold, skip the bleach, and lay heavyweight pieces flat to dry. That’s our official care advice, and it’s the single biggest factor in whether your oversized fit stays oversized.

A 524 gsm hoodie holds a lot of water. Hang it wet and the weight stretches the shoulders and body downward. Throw it in a hot dryer and cotton shrinks. Either way, the silhouette you sized for is gone. Flat drying on a rack keeps the boxy shape square.

A few more habits we swear by:

  • Turn graphics and embroidery inside out before washing. Screen prints and stitched logos last much longer without rubbing against the drum.
  • Wash dark and sun-faded pieces together. Garment-dyed and washed finishes, like the ETCH. HOODIE’s sun fade, soften over time. That’s the point. Just keep them away from your whites.
  • Go cold for the planet too. ENERGY STAR notes that heating water accounts for about 90% of the energy a clothes washer uses, and cold water handles most everyday loads fine.

Our clothing is made in small runs in New York, and most of it won’t be restocked. A little care means it stays in your rotation for years.

FAQ: styling unisex streetwear

Should I size up or down in unisex clothing?

It depends on the silhouette you want. If you usually wear women’s sizes, start one size down from your usual for the designed fit, and two down for a cleaner look. If you usually wear men’s sizes, take your normal size. Always compare the size chart against a piece you already own.

How do I wear oversized streetwear if I’m petite?

Keep the volume in one place and show some shape elsewhere. A cropped, boxy hoodie over high-rise pants works well, as does a fitted tee with relaxed cargos. On our product pages, Hazel (5’5″) wears a 0.0 in the ONYX. JKT and ICHIGO. TEE, which gives a relaxed fit without swallowing her frame.

What do JŪN’s numbered sizes mean?

Our sizes map to standard letters: 0.0 is XS, 0.1 is S, 0.2 is M, 0.3 is L, and 0.4 is XL on select styles. All pieces are unisex. Each product page lists the intended fit plus the height and size of every model shown.

What shoes work with unisex streetwear?

Match the shoe’s weight to the outfit’s volume. Chunkier sneakers balance wide pants and boxy hoodies, while slimmer low-tops suit tapered sweats and fitted tees. The goal is keeping the outfit from looking top-heavy or bottom-heavy.

Will sold-out JŪN pieces be restocked?

Usually not. Many of our jackets and pants are made in runs of 12 to 15 pieces, and we can’t guarantee restocks from past seasons.

Does JŪN ship outside the US?

Yes. We ship worldwide, with free shipping to the US, Canada, and Hong Kong. Most orders arrive within one to two weeks. For other countries, shipping is calculated at checkout and local customs duties may apply. Full details are on our shipping page.

Wear it your way

Styling unisex streetwear comes down to a few decisions you make once and reuse forever: the silhouette you want, where the volume lives, how your layers stack, and which single piece tells the story. Get those right and the label on the tag stops mattering.

Our name, JŪN (君), stands for honor and integrity in Chinese culture, and it’s the middle character our grandparents gave our whole generation of the family. You can read the full story behind JŪN. It’s why we design pieces meant to be worn by anyone and made to last.
