Taiwan’s industry relies on precision manufacturing. Everything from semiconductor chips and LED lights to networking hardware, power adapters, and smart wearable technology is manufactured by Taiwanese manufacturers in vast amounts and supplied to the entire world. One of the most rapidly developing countries that requires these products is India. However, there is one problem: many of them cannot be sold in India without BIS certification.
If you are a Taiwanese manufacturer or exporter targeting India, here we will tell you what BIS certification Taiwan is, who needs it, and how to obtain it without wasting months because of avoidable mistakes.
What Is BIS Certification?
BIS stands for Bureau of Indian Standards, which is the standards organisation for India. Certification marks from BIS demonstrate compliance of the particular product to the particular Indian Standard (IS) in relation to its safety, quality, and reliability.
The most obvious equivalent for Taiwanese firms is BSMI. Just like BSMI regulates products being sold in Taiwan, BIS regulates products being sold in India. Approval from BSMI for local products cannot be translated into approval in India. India demands its own certificate, its own tests, and its own documentation.
Which Schemes Apply to Taiwanese Manufacturers?
Two main routes cover most products.
It is a wide range of electrical and electronics items that includes products like mobile handsets, power supplies, LED lights, CCTV cameras, laptops, smartwatches, and Bluetooth speakers. After testing the item according to the relevant Indian Standard at a laboratory approved by the BIS, the manufacturer is provided with a registration number for the item.
This applies to many electrical appliances, industrial goods, and materials. It is stricter than CRS because it usually involves a factory inspection and ongoing surveillance, not only product testing.
Foreign manufacturers who need a licence usually go through the Foreign Manufacturers Certification Scheme (FMCS), under which BIS officials may audit your plant in Taiwan.
The Step-by-Step Process
The details vary by product, but the general path looks like this:
How Long Does It Take?
Timeline depends on the type of product, laboratory availability, and the level of tidiness of your documents. As a general rule, registration with CRS normally takes between one and two months. In the case of ISI licenses, the process may take anything from three to six months or even longer. One error in the documentation can undo all of your hard work.
Common Mistakes Taiwanese Exporters Make
Assuming BSMI test reports are enough. They usually aren’t accepted as-is.
Starting too late. Many companies lock in an Indian buyer first and think about certification afterward. By then, shipping deadlines are already looming.
Changing the design mid-process. If you alter a critical component after testing, you may need to retest.
Choosing an inexperienced representative. Your AIR is your link to BIS. Slow replies or unclear communication can stall an application for weeks.
Ignoring renewal. CRS registrations expire and need to be renewed. Missing the date can interrupt your supply chain.
Why Work With UMSPCS?
Certification is not so much a matter of filling out papers but rather understanding how the process really works. This is what UMSPCS is for. Our experts will help you understand whether BIS certification applies to your product, select the appropriate scheme, gather the necessary documents, arrange for the tests and see the process through until it is complete.
If you intend to export your product to India, contacting UMSPCS even before finalising your product’s design will help you save both time and money.
