According to (2019), the goat population in the 20th Livestock Census of India is 148.88 million, and it is 27.8% of the total livestock population of the country.

Some Popular goat breeds are better for goat rearing in India: 

Black Bengal Goat: This breed of goat is mainly found in West Bengal, Odisha and Assam. The weight of the male goat of this species is 32 kg, and the weight of the female goat is 20 kg.

Barbari Goat: This breed of goat is found in cities like Gurgaon, Karnal, Rohtak and Panipat in Haryana, Delhi and Uttar Pradesh. 

Marwari Goat: Marwari breed goat is found in the Marwar region of Rajasthan, which includes Pali, Jodhpur, Jalore, Bikaner, Barmer and Jaisalmer districts. 

Osmanabadi Goat: This breed is found in Osmanabad province of Maharashtra. Its body is of medium size. Its colour is black.

Sirohi Goat: Goats of this breed are mostly found in the Sirohi district of Rajasthan. The goat of this breed gives an average of 0.5 kg of milk per day, which is very less.
