Uses of Ammonia in Agriculture

Nitrogen is one of the most important nutrients for plant growth and ammonia fertilizers help overcome the nitrogen deficiency in soil. Urea produced from ammonia is a major nitrogenous fertilizer used worldwide. Ammonium nitrate and ammonium sulfate are other nitrogen-based fertilizers manufactured using ammonia.

 

These fertilizers are soluble in water and readily absorbable by plant roots to boost crop yields. Ammonia is also used for production of mono-ammonium phosphate (MAP) and di-ammonium phosphate (DAP), which are phosphate fertilizers containing nitrogen as well. Foliar application of aqueous ammonia assists in direct absorption of nitrogen by plant leaves.
