The Bhagavad Gita through Saṃskṛtam – Beginner I course offers students an immersive introduction to the foundational aspects of the Saṃskṛtam language, including the origins of its sounds, parts of speech, and correct pronunciation. Students will analyze the structure of simple Saṃskṛtam sentences by identifying nouns, pronouns, and verbs, and gradually composing small sentences using these elements.
A key focus of the course is understanding the concepts of person, number, and gender in Saṃskṛtam. As students progress, they will learn to recognize subject, object, and verb structures within sentences. Additionally, the course introduces different grammatical cases, with an emphasis on the first and sixth cases, enabling students to construct sentences in the simple present tense.
Beyond grammar, this course provides an introduction to the Bhagavad Gita, a revered text of Hindu philosophy. Students will explore the concept of poetic meter (chanda), with special attention to the anuṣṭubh meter. They will practice chanting and reciting selected verses from Chapter 1 of the Bhagavad Gita, while also gaining insights into their meanings.
Through this structured approach, students will develop a foundational understanding of Saṃskṛtam, enhancing both linguistic skills and appreciation for its literary and philosophical significance. By the end of the Bhagavad Gita through Saṃskṛtam – Beginner I course, students will be equipped with basic reading, recitation, and comprehension skills, fostering a deeper connection with the language and its sacred texts.
